Aidan contacted Griffin Solicitors enquiring about his grandmother Barbara’s house. Aidan informed us that Barbara had died in 1986. He said that his father Jim had lived in the property until his death 10 years ago. Aidan stated that none of his aunts or uncles were alive. He said that Barbara had 12 grandchildren. Four of Barbara’s grandchildren lived in the UK and had never lived in Ireland.
Aidan wanted to know what could be done with the property as it had not been lived in for 10 years and was falling into a state if disrepair.
It was suggested Aidan contact the local authority to see would they be interested in purchasing the property. The local authority was keen to purchase the property. The County Council purchased the property at its full valuation.
The estate was administered under the laws of intestacy and Aidan acted as the legal personal representative.
In order to make the application to the probate office Aidan needed to obtain all his cousins PPS numbers, mobile numbers, email addresses and address so they could be furnished to the Probate office.
A difficulty arose as some of Aidan’s cousins needed to apply for Irish PPS numbers in order to benefit under an Irish estate. His cousins needed to make an application to Revenue to obtain PPS Numbers.
Happily, the sale of Barbara’s disused property not only benefited her grandchildren who received a generous inheritance but to the city at large, going a small way to address the housing crisis.
